EndNote Online
EndNote Online is a free cloud-based version of EndNote that is used through your browser. Not all features of the EndNote program are available in EndNote Online, but an advantage of the online version is that you can use it from any computer. If you have the EndNote program installed on several computers, you can also use EndNote Online to sync your libraries and access all your references regardless of which computer you are working on.
You create your account and log in to EndNote Online here.
EndNote Online and Word
If you do not have the EndNote program installed on your computer, you need to download the add-on program Cite While You Write to connect EndNote Online with Word. You download it in Word under “Options”>”Download Installers”, the program requires administrator rights on the computer. With Cite While You Write, you can then insert references from your EndNote Online library and create bibliographies in Word documents. If you have the program EndNote on your computer, it is recommended to insert the references from there. If you are missing a reference style in EndNote Online, please contact the library.
-
Go to www.myendnoteweb.com and create an EndNote account Before you go ahead and set up sync, make a backup of your EndNote library.
-
On Computer 1, open the EndNote library you want to use for syncing and enable syncing by entering your EndNote Web/Online account information under “Edit”>”Preferences”>”Sync”. Start sync by clicking “EndNote Web sync”.
-
On Computer 2, open EndNote and create a brand new library. Enable sync by entering your EndNote Web/Online account details under “Edit”>”Preferences”>”Sync”. Click “EndNote Web sync” to sync. If you had groups in your library, they end up under “Unfiled Groups”. Drag them to “My Groups”.
When you have enabled sync as above, changes you make to your EndNote library on one computer will be reflected in your EndNote Web/Online account and on your other computers. Keep in mind that only one library per computer can be used for syncing.
If you have the EndNote for iPad app, you can sync your EndNote library to your iPad using EndNote Online.
EndNote Online can be used to sync EndNote libraries between different computers. But it can also be used as a stand-alone program, that is, you can log in to www.myendnoteweb.com and add, remove or edit references. If you have sync set to EndNote on your computer, your changes will be synced there the next time you use EndNote on your computer.
Some features differ between EndNote Online and the EndNote program (EndNote Desktop).
With EndNote Online, you can share a group with other EndNote Online users under “Organize”>”Manage My Groups”. You can choose to grant permission to read and/or edit. Attachments are not shared, only the references are shared. Group sets are not visible in EndNote Online. Since the groups are listed in alphabetical order, it is recommended to add a prefix to sort the groups in alphabetical order corresponding to your Group sets.
Note! In EndNote Online, you use the “Remove From Group” function to remove a reference from a group. Using “Delete” removes the reference from “All references”, even if the group is selected when you press “Delete”. This is a difference to EndNote Desktop where it is only when you select All references and then press “Delete” that a reference is completely removed from the library.
As with EndNote Desktop, you can add references to EndNote Online in several different ways: “Collect”>”Online Search” can be used to search e.g. PubMed. If you know an article’s PMID number (which is listed under each reference in PubMed), you can choose to search for it. The search results are displayed under the heading “Online Search Results”. Select the references you want and add to a group and they will be added to your library. A tip is to select “Select Favorites” under “Collect”>”Online Search” and choose, for example, PubMed (NLM).
In Samsök and other Ebsco databases, you can export references to EndNote Online by clicking on the folder next to a reference in the hit list, clicking on Folder and choosing “Export”>”Direct Export to EndNote Web”.
Another way to add references to your EndNote Online library is via the “Capture Reference” bookmark which you can find under Options>Download Installers.
